SB1103 aims to provide necessary protection to keep small businesses and nonprofits from being pushed out of their communities.

Authored by Senator Caroline Menjivar (D - San Fernando Valley) and co-sponsored by Inclusive Action for the City, Public Counsel, Bet Tzedek Legal Services, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area, Small Business Majority, and the California Association for Micro Enterprise Opportunity (Cameo).

WHAT SB1103 WILL DO

  • Make sure lease agreements are easy to understand no matter what language business owners’ speak.

  • Keep the amount of money businesses need to put down low when they rent a space.

  • Give businesses more time to prepare if their rent is going up or if they have to leave their space.

  • Stop rents from suddenly going way up and keep businesses from being kicked out.

  • Help people start and keep their own small businesses.

  • Protect the shops and services that have been in neighborhoods for years.

  • Give free legal help to businesses to fight unfair treatment
